New York, NY 10036
Times Square, the heart of the Theater District, is an extended intersection of Broadway and Seventh Avenue. On the streets that cross Broadway more than 40 theaters, from the old to the new are displaying their extravagant productions that makes this experience a must-see and do in New York. Once a neglected and squalid neighborhood, 42nd Street and Broadway is now clean, safe and tourist-friendly. Visitors hoping for bargains on same-day theater tickets will eventually make their way to the famed TKTS ticket board, where the day’s discounted offerings are posted.
Commercial attractions such as Ripley’s Believe it or Not, Madame Tussauds, Circle Line and the Intrepid Air Space Museum (recently re-opened) have given Times Square the face lift it needed. Residential towers are now popping up in an area that realtors like to call Clinton. If you’re looking for a bargain, ethnic eateries along Ninth Avenue serve more varied food than the traditional pre-theater spots and tend to be cheaper than the famous ‘restaurant row’ spots.
West of Times Square, in the vicinity of the Port Authority Bus terminal (on Eighth Avenue) and the Lincoln Tunnel’s traffic-knotted entrance, is an area historically known as Hell’s Kitchen, where a gang- and crime- ridden Irish community scraped by during the 19th century. Italians, Greeks, Puerto Ricans, Dominicans and other ethnic now inhabit the area. This area is also becoming the “new Chelsea” as rents in Chelsea continue to rise.
