West 34st Street
New York, NY 10001
Beginning on 34th street at Broadway and stretching all the way to Seventh Avenue, Macy’s Herald Square is still the biggest-and busiest-department store in the world. The giant circular building on Seventh Avenue, between 31st and 33rd Streets, is the sports and entertainment arena known as Madison Square Garden. It occupies the site of what once was the old Pennsylvania Station, an architectural masterpiece that was torn down in the 1960s to make way for the sports arena – an act considered by many to be so heartless, that it spurred the creation of the Landmarks Preservation Commission. The railroad terminal, now known as Penn Station, lies beneath the Garden and serves around 600,000 commuters daily, more than any other station in the country.
Within the buildings surrounding the area from 34th Street to 42nd Street, between Sixth and Eighth Avenues, also known as the Garment District, are the offices and showrooms of the country’s top fashion industries. Twice a year, in February and September, an enormous tent is built to take over Bryant Park (Sixth Ave between 40th and 42nd sts), for the famous New York Fashion Week’s runway shows.
