The gateway to the Upper West Side is Columbus Circle, where Broadway meets 59th Street, 8th Avenue, Central Park South and Central Park West to form a rare rotary in a rectangular city. A statue of Christopher Columbus is positioned in the center between Central Park and the Time Warner Center. The Time Warner complex houses some of the most exquisite shops and restaurants as well as luxury apartments, a hotel and Jazz at Lincoln Center.
The largest cultural complex in the world, Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts sets the stage for the Upper West Side with 12 resident companies dedicated to music, dance, theater and film, including the Metropolitan Opera. Walking through the neighborhood, you’ll see their influences everywhere, from cafes and shops with musical themes to passers-by wheeling cellos or practicing arias.
But the arts are only one facet of the Upper West Side. Visitors flock to the American Museum of Natural History and its state-of-the-art Rose Center for Earth and Space. History buffs are fascinated by the New York City Historical Society, affectionately called the ‘city’s attic’. Amsterdam Avenue is known for its restaurants and is a favored spot for a leisurely Sunday brunch.
Further uptown is Morningside Heights; home to the beautiful campuses of Columbia University and Barnard College, as well as Riverside Church and the ever-evolving Cathedral of St. John the Divine, the largest cathedral in the world.
